This M.A. thesis deals with the fundamentals, methods and concepts of visualization in graphical user interfaces, illustrated using the example of a configuration system developed for Blaupunkt GmbH. As a basis for this thesis, the relevant fundamentals of Visualization, Cognitive Science and Design are introduced, followed by Norms and Styleguides from Design and Software-Ergonomics. The recommendations contained in those Norms and Styleguides provide a context for the examined methods and concepts of Visualization. Suitable techniques and methods from Visualization are identified and selected for use in the graphical user interface. Finally the most suitable solutions and their respective realization in the project are described
ConfIDent – An Open Platform for FAIR Conference Metadata
Currently, information on scientific events such as conferences is often scattered and not available in the long term. With the project ConfIDent we want to develop a service platform for the quality-driven, collaborative curation of semantically structured metadata of scientific events. It will provide reliable and transparent data and workflows for researchers (organizers, speakers, participants) as well as other stakeholders of scientific events such as university administrations, libraries, sponsors, publishers or specialized societies. The sustainability of the service will not only be obtained a user-centered approach but also by connecting it to existing services enabling data exchange, and by the commitment to the FAIR principles. ConfIDent will reach the current desideratum of long-term findable, open, referenceable and reusable metadata on scientific events.DFG/Wissenschaftskommunikation, Forschungsdaten, eResearch (Wissenschaftliche Literaturversorgungs- und Informationssysteme)/426477583/E

OSGeo conference videos as a resource for scientific research: The TIB|AV Portal
This paper reports on new opportunities for research and education in Free and Open Source Geoinformatics as a translational part of Open Science, enabled by a growing collection of OSGeo conference video recordings at the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB). Since 2015, OSGeo conference recordings have been included to the collection sphere of TIB in information sciences. Currently, video content from selected national (FOSSGIS), regional (FOSS4G-NA) and global (FOSS4G) conferences is being actively collected. The annual growth exceeds 100 hours of new content relating to the OSGeo software projects and the OSGeo scientific-technical communities. This is seconded by retrospective acquisition of video material dating from past conferences, going back until 2002 to preserve this content, ensuring both long term availability and access. The audiovisual OSGeo-related content is provided through the TIB|AV Portal, a web-based platform for scientific audiovisual media providing state-of-the art multimedia analysis and retrieval. It implements the requirements by research libraries for reliable long term preservation. Metadata enhancement analysis provides extended search and retrieval options. Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) enable scientific citation of full videos, excerpts and still frames, use in education and also referral in social networks. This library-operated service infrastructure turns the audiovisual OSGeo-related content in a reliable source for science and education

GRASS GIS, Star Trek and old Video Tape
This paper discusses the need for the preservation of audiovisual content in the OSGeo communities beyond the established software repositories. Audiovisual content related to OSGeo projects such as training videos can be preserved by multimedia archiving and retrieval services which are currently developed by the library community. This is demonstrated by the reference case of a newly discovered version of the GRASS GIS 1987 promotional video which is being included into the AV-portal of the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB). Access to the video will be provided upon the release of the web-based portal, allowing for extended search capabilities based on enhanced metadata derived by automated video analysis. This is a reference case for future preservation activities regarding semantic-enhanced Web2.0 content from OSGeo projects

TIB AV-Portal: A reliable infrastructure for scientific audiovisual media
With the AV Portal 1 , the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) 2 in
collaboration with the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI)3 has developed a user-oriented platform
for scientific films. This portal offers free access to high-quality computer visualisations,
simulations, experiments and interviews as well as recordings of lectures and conferences
from the fields of science and technology. The automatic video analysis of the TIB AV Portal
includes not only structural analysis (scene recognition), but also text, audio and image
analysis. Automatic indexing by the AV Portal describes videos at the segment level, enabling
pinpoint searches to be made within videos. Films are allocated a Digital Object Identifier
(DOI), which means they can be referenced clearly. Individual film segments are allocated
a Media Fragment Identifier (MFID), which enables the video to be referenced down to
the second and cited. The creator of the audiovisual media segment can choose between
an Open Access licence and a declaration of consent, enabling them to decide how they wish to permit TIB to utilise the material. TIB recommends the “CC-Namensnennung – Deutschland
3.0” licence, which ensures that the creator is acknowledged and permits the comprehensive
use of audiovisual media in research and teaching
